@mirabilos @dalias @davidculley So I might be wrong, I am not in fact a copyright lawyer... I don't think that determinism is the thing that determines whether something is transformative.
I wrote a blog post on this a while ago. There's an algorithm I can plug into blender that will generate an infinite number of asteroids by iterating on a relatively simple mathematical description.
While I might in fact be wrong, I am fairly certain that the output of such a generator is transformative enough to be copyrighted. If it's not, there's an awful lot of art out there that probably cannot withstand copyright scrutiny, since its creation is nothing more than a sequence of deterministic transformers applied to some root seed...
