If you stay West of.... I'll say Haymarket on 66, stay out of Richmond (violent apes) or Charlottseville (commie pinkos), it's pretty decent. I have a few friends that live in Richmond so I don't mind stopping to visit them when I roll through.

The I-81 corridor, Shenandoah Valley, has some really gorgeous views South of I-66.

Most of the state South / Southwest of I-64 can be pretty bucholic, delightfully so.
