I think it's partially the fact that people are quite genuine and earnest on Mastodon, and there's a fair amount of whiplash from discussing people being victimised and rioting in the streets to "what games are you playing"

If you don't care about people that's easy. But it is quite hard to turn chatty on and off in the midst of everything going on.
