Yahama is the company that made Vocaloid, the software.
Many people/organizations have made their own Vocaloid software.
One of them is Crypton Future Media. By chance they ended up making a few of the most popular characters. They made Miku, Luka, Meiko, Taito and Rin en Len. This is usually what people refer to when they say "Vocaloids".
There are many other (probably hundreds or thousands) of Vocaloid characters made not by Crypton. They are technically also "Vocaloids".
Then there's other softwares as well, such as UTAU. They also have a bunch of their own characters. They are technically not "Vocaloids" because they do not use the Vocaloid software.
Even though she is often mistaken for one because of her massive popularity Teto is not actually "Vocaloid".
That's why I urge people to say "Vocalsynth" and not "Vocaloid" when referring to these characters because it also includes characters from other softwares and not just proprietary Yamaha ones.
I could probably rewrite this as a RMS interjection pasta.
