I get the sense that a lot of what *seemed* like engaging original worldbuilding to an American eye was... just the stuff that was ripped wholesale from British culture. When she went on to try to write a story that was supposed to be set in the past of the US, she no longer had her intimate understanding of British culture to prop up her poor worldbuilding skills with and it *really* showed.
