Mastodon is not really what "built" the Fediverse. The Fediverse has existed for quite some time, and to be fair, I quite enjoyed having a space for people with a free software mindset. I don't think "mass adoption" is what we should strive for per se, there's nothing wrong with having spaces with a purpose and trying to keep it that way.
