Yet, whenever failed attempts went unpunished—often involving military officers and political figures—the same actors would resurface in new plots, sometimes succeeding the next time. Today, Brazil’s judiciary is keenly aware that it cannot afford to be lenient with those who conspire against democratic institutions.
