@GossiTheDog @thomasfuchs IIUC, you can run your own PDS, and you can run your own relay, but by the spec every PDS must send its full firehose to every relay. This means it can't scale, and it's designed not to scale. It's decentralised in the same way that diodes allow current in both directions.

This matters for the original point. When governments introduce stupid laws, 100 big organisations running relays will obey. 10k tiny servers will not. And AT cannot ever have 10k tiny relays.
