@arclight @ai6yr I went to a (for the time) radical/experimental vocational middle school in Australia in the 70s, and we dudes didn't get out of 8th grade without holding a license to operate a sewing machine.

The girls, of course, had to be able to tear down an engine, do basic metalwork, and operate a drill press.

I loved that school.
