The more disadvantaged you are, the most likely you are to have liabilities instead of safety nets – sick family members with big medical debts being the most common one. My experience is most people who have a turn of bad luck never really recover (many stories about a "gap in a resume" being a genuine career-killer), and stories like guys' this mostly just get used to justify keeping the whole system the way it is.
