It's sort of a paradox that they just gloss over and don't want us to talk about. Chicken pox is the same way. Shingles was a rare disease many years ago, because exposure to chicken pox virus kept your immune system prepared. Suddenly we have a chicken pox vaccine, so anyone alive right now who got chicken pox is very likely to have shingles. If it breaks through to any kids, they'll probably get a horrible case too and continue the cycle. It's an allegedly noble goal to try and remove these viruses from humanity, but is it really plausible? I'm not so sure. I still wonder if we truly eradicated smallpox, for example...
