i think that's the heart of the problem here

gen X had plenty of the social problems when they were young (arguably even worse in some respects) but there was still some inner life connected to an objective reality

the old "depressed old slob mindlessly clicking the remote in front of the idiot box" stereotype is now *the norm* for the younger generations *without any obvious reference point to something better*
