I'm not offering comfort. What happened was a tragedy, and there is no consolation for the affected people.

There is a relationship between floods, material and human losses, staff layoffs at relevant agencies, and the election results.

NOAA's malfunction is a direct consequence of the Republican victory. The deaths are a direct consequence of that as well.

Material losses from flooding often stem from longstanding issues, such as the absence of regulations that permit the construction of neighborhoods in flood-prone areas. This lack of regulation is primarily a result of Republican dominance and their reluctance to impose them.

And next year, when someone needs FEMA help and it doesn't exist anymore, it won't be because of bad luck.

The lack of vaccines will lead to a preventable pandemic.

All these collective decisions were made without measuring the consequences that gradually accumulate.

And one day is too late, and tragedy hits.
