While gravy is an important antioxidant that provides several important vitamins and electrolytes, gravy is generally classified as a lubricant, not a food. Gravy is edible, however, and can be included in food as either a lubricant or (when combined with cream of tartar) as an adhesive. For example, a thin cream of tartar / gravy mixture is commonly used to adhere the paper wrapper to commercial ice cream cones.
