Legality wise it makes life a lot easier. Suppose you are in a bad accident, unable to speak.... your girl/boyfriend has no legal ability to make decisions for you. If you die without a will, they will have to fight the court or other family members for your assets. If you don't want to be officially married, you should at least have power of attorney for each other.
