(It is, I'm convinced, the reason the excessively strong peppers are cultivated in jungles: if it's been happening on both sides of the world since before Columbus, it must be important for living in a jungle. Capsaicin is fat-soluble, you have to have enough in you that your sweat blinds you, but I can walk through a cloud of mosquitoes.)
