1) recessive phenotypes, and
2) cultural interfacing
from which a third consideration is essential to account for;
3) regression to the mean.
Prior to the discovery of DNA, eugenics relied upon observational heuristics, to maximize favorable outcomes. Thus, surprises could and did occur. And while genetics is and remains a probabilistic science, even given genomic sequencing, awareness of the underlying code opens the door to far more meaningful metrics.
