The Twitter outage had no effect on Mastodon sign-ups.
But it did result in a spike in Mastodon posts.
This implies many people are using Mastodon as a "back-up" Twitter.

@atomicpoet It makes sense. Some people just want Elon Musk to go away & think once that happens, it will be okay. Many do not see the fiscal icebergs ahead composed of:
?? Lost ad revenue
?? Future FTC fines
?? EU Sanctions
?? Landlord lawsuits for unpaid rent
?? Wrongful termination lawsuits
?? Bank interest loan payment
I expect #ElonMusk to declare himself a Spartan & try to fight it all in court, but #Twitter looks doomed if you ask me.
@darnell it goes deeper though, doesn't it?
The :birdsite: dumpster fire is as clear an example of why it's a mistake to continue to treat centralized services as public infrastructure as we're ever going to get.
It's no longer about "will Twitter survive", but more about "should we rely so much on centralized services at all."
The damage done to the core infrastructure of Twitter will cost billions to repair and restore. Billions.
Rehire large numbers of talented people, reinstate processes and procedures as well as undo changes to code… good luck there.
On top of that the brand damage is severe.
Like MySpace, someone will buy the corpse for a few million but it will never come back to it’s almost profitable pre-musk statute. It wasn’t profitable before and not it’s REALLY not profitable
@atomicpoet @darnell The mandated 3rd party FTC audit of Twitter in January to review compliance with the FTC order Twitter is supposed to be working under is going to be brutal. Twitter has been blatantly violated multiple requirements
@Waterloo @atomicpoet I doubt it. Elon is not even paying landlords their rent money! https://www.cnbc.com/2022/12/13/twitter-reportedly-hasnt-paid-rent-on-its-office-spaces-for-weeks.html
@darnell @atomicpoet has muskrat paid out employee stock
