I need a new and cheaper way to get an adrenaline rush; buying domain names is starting to wear out my wallet. ;)

    Any ideas?

@RL_Dane @jppelt @joel @benjaminhollon Or tweaking fonts in Gentoo, which requires more booze, the patience of a Zen Master, a full OS recompile, and the sacrificing of a goat in the nearest volcano (travel time and expenses extra).

      Probably.

@RL_Dane @jppelt @joel @benjaminhollon The one thing I could never get working right in Fedora were fonts. No matter what I tried or patched, not only was the quality never good enough but web pages were often not recognizing installed fonts. When I’m looking at text all day, I can’t use something that makes my eyes proverbially water.

Yeah, if you're used to the mac's incredibly soft font rendering (that's not a criticism, just the best word I can think of to describe it), nothing else will look good to you: neither Windows nor any regular UNIX.

I do miss that some days. You can somewhat mimic it by disabling hinting, but only so much.
The other problem is that you have GTK2, 3, 4, and QT (and maybe others). It's a lot of places to find the right configs to change it.

Everyone I've ever known who's tried Fedora seems to loooooove it.
I tried Fedora Core 2, but it was a bit slow on my Pentium 166 lol.

I'm vaguely distrustful of Redhat, so I tend to stay away from Fedora.

Also, hunting down .rpms and their dependencies on RedHat 7.x 20 years ago dadgum nearly gave me PTSD. Debian gave you apt-cd (or was it apt-cdrom?) that told you exactly which discs you needed. Redhat didn't even give you a file listing. :P

@jppelt @RL_Dane @joel @benjaminhollon Agreed. If I was still using Linux I’d likely use either PopOS or ElementaryOS. Fedora was solid, but had a few quirks I could never figure out.

      @pimoore @RL_Dane @joel @benjaminhollon I have a laptop that changes distros on the monthly/weekly/daily.

I like Fedora a lot…a lot. Having a #system76 desktop, super happy to be running :popos: although I have :fedora: in my personal travel laptop.

Work forces me to use Windows but always happier using Linux and FOSS. Caveat: I do not have the time I did in the 90s to hunt down drivers.

@RL_Dane @pimoore @joel @benjaminhollon i tried it once. Did not get very far. Was happy to consider myself a failure and move on. I simply do not have the necessary patience and required exactitude - if that is the mot juste - for the endeavor. I feel that it is next level sadism. At my age, happy to fresh install a mainstream distro, grab a fresh adult beverage and call it a day.

@RL_Dane @joel @benjaminhollon Nobody installs Gentoo. The distro mangles you into submission with esoteric commands, barbaric screams through huge compile times, and an alcoholic binge of failure until, finally, you are one with it.

One does not simply INSTALL Gentoo.

      It must be earned.

Forget about whether or not YOU like Gentoo.
The question, my friend, is whether or not #Gentoo likes YOU.

In Soviet #Linux, Distro chooses YOU!

      It's #GNOME. It's always Gnome. :P

My first experience running Linux on a modestly beefy machine in a lot of years was on my iMac in 2019.
Gnome tracker brought that box to its *knees*. I couldn't figure out why it kept freezing within a few minutes of starting up.

To their credit, Gnome has fixed a *log* of their performance issues, as of whatever the last version number was before they switched to dumb integer version numbers.

Yeah, Fedora can be slow on older machines, I've found.
