     Just dumping this in this thread, since it is somewhat on topic:

     So based on some quick reading today, it seems that the only secure messengers that exist at the moment and are fairly established _without any ties to blockchain or crypto_ and have clients for a regular laptop are:

     Conversations/XMPP, Element/Matrix, Jami, Delta chat and Tox.

     Does anyone here have any experience with them? What are the pro/cons according to you?

     XMPP (just naming the protocol, because Conversations isn't the only client, and fuck smartphones):
     Hands down the best option, despite having a reputation of being too hard for normies to understand, it really isn't that hard.
     It has proper, proven end-to-end encryption, it's very lightweight, and it's just a chat protocol rather than a fucking spaceship like Discucked.
     However, most clients suck.
     
     Matrix:
     Basically, current year corpo and poorly rewritten version of XMPP.
     Funded by the Jews, trying really hard to mimick Discucked, decentralized on paper, but in practise there's heavy reliance on the matrix.org server because almost everyone uses that, and matrix.org is Cuckflared, which is a major security issue.
     Plus the server side soft is bloated as fuck, meta-data leakage happens all the time, though the plus side is that it has end to end encrypted chatrooms, which no other platform or protocol has.
     Also, even though other clients are out there, everyone is using Element because other clients are inferior (by design?), and Element is soyware written in Electron.
     Despite the downsides, it's at least way way way better than most other chat software.
     076 used to have a Matrix server before I joined this place, but apparently at some very random day the server got destroyed minutes after loli frog pointed out the authoritarianism in Australia and how that might be the future of Japan if we all continue to not stand up.
     
     Jami:
     My experience is that each person MUST use the exact same client using the exact same GUI library, exact same OS, and exact same version in order to communicate with one other.
     Plus each OS comes with an entirely different UI despite being written by the same developers.
     I had to explain using an Android screen how to start a chat on iOS by email, and the person on the other side didn't understand it, so I asked him to send screenshots, and as it turned out the entire UI is completely different.
     What's more, when I tried the GTK version, it just crashes a few minutes later even when I just have it opened up and I'm doing nothing with it.
     So Jami is literally unusable.
     
     Delta chat:
     Basically email turned into a chat platform.
     Client is written in Electron, therefore it sucks.
     Better just use a real email client with PGP encryption by default instead.
     
     Tox:
     Pretty decent alternative to XMPP, it's basically XMPP without a server in the middle, because it's P2P.
     However, both sides need to be online in order to store messages, because due to the lack of a server, you can't just send messages to someone who's offline or they'll simply never arrive.
     And it suffers from the same problem as XMPP and Matrix when it comes to clients; most just suck ass.

     Thank you very much for the write up. Seems like there is no "perfect" protocol and client and that each have their own problems at the moment. =(

     Sad to hear that delta decided an electron app was a good idea. I really dislike those 100+ mb clients.

     @h4890 XMPP is still the best out of the 5, perhaps IRC might be better if the server side is Ergo (because it hides user IP addresses, and has some other tweaks to make using it more anonymous than other IRC softs), and having it go over either the Tor or I2P netowkrs.
     Plus IRC has the added benefit of having more (loyal) users.

     Interesting. Never heard of Ergo will definitely have a look. Last time I messed around with xmpp I used something called prosody which was super simple to setup.

     I also like the fact that I can run irc and xmpp (if things haven't changed in the last few years) on an IP address, so having a domain name is not a requirement, which it is for matrix I think.

     @ryo @h4890 I mean, telegram is an obvious honeybot based on the mere fact that it requires a fone number to sign up. That's an instant, massive red flag.
     
     For some reason every time I point this out I get a lot of people arguing with me. If I were the block-happy type that would be how I'd fill up my list.

     Self-solving problem. ACL out morg on every room you are in, do not participate in rooms that don't.

     This may get fixed, since it is something the spec writers are aware of. Y'know, after they get done shoehorning pronouns in.

     Doesn't omeemo have a special case for this if everyone has added everyone else as buddies? Lurch, pidgin's omeemo plugin, talks about it.
     It doesn't work anyway, because lurch mostly doesn't work.

If you just take the spec, make your own server + client, fully coompliant*, host your own instance and offer it to people, and hell, while you're at it, disable federation (or restrict it to only instances of your server - do that in nginx conf or whatever) you will encounter no jewishness.

     @Zerglingman @h4890 @charliebrownau @ryo I think it's a fun film, good fights, interesting theme... but yeah if you break down the idpol stuff and the plot... white guy's gotta learn from black people so he can sacrifice himself for more black people... switch was a tranny in the original script who changed genders when they went into the matrix that's why their name was switch, but the 90s directors edited that part out. Not to mention the love interest for the main character is like the most mannish looking woman ever conceived.

     Sunk cost fallacy on the investor side? I've seen it happen. If you have a talkative and PR oriented CEO, they can make the investors believe the most horrible things, since they have already sunk millions in the company.

     I will gladly do so. Email is one of my favourite methods of communication, so if delta can be used without a 100+ mb electron app, I'm all for giving it a go.

     Oh, and I don't own a smart phone, so my chatting only takes place on my laptop, so no apps for me I'm afraid.

     @h4890 @charliebrownau Lack of a real DeltaChat client is what makes me not use it.
     The official client is not a real desktop client, it's Electron, which is basically a headless Chromium browser that can only run 1 website.
     There's apparently a command line frontend, but it's SoyScript.
