   One thing about intensively studying other languages is it strikes me how large the gap is in English between the spoken and the written language, and even in the written language, the large gaps between different styles of writing.

     @pjperez @emilygorcenski English spelling is really pictograms, they're just constructed from the Latin alphabet

     @emilygorcenski that's something Spanish speakers find mind blowing. If you hear a word in Spanish as a Spanish speaker you immediately know how it's written. Almost the same in Catalan. There may be exceptions due to b/v being the same sound or h being silent, but there's that.
