People get angry when I saw the word "rip-off". But "rip-off" is the term people use to dismiss derivative works of art.
Nevertheless, the best art in the world is often derivative:
1. Michaelangelo's David
2. Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans
3. Most hip hop albums ever made
Maybe we should re-claim the term "rip-off".
Whenever someone gets upset about small studio animators making a knock-off of a Disney film, I just ask them, "Well, what about the Lion King?"
And then I tell them about Kimba: The White Lion, and how the Lion King is a rip-off of an anime.
Thereafter, I ask the following question: how many Disney movies are actually based on stories in the public domain?
Why get upset at small studio animators who also make movies based on stories in the public domain?
The most blatant of Disney-made knock-offs is The Lion King.
Which was clearly swiped from the anime Kimba: The White Lion—which was originally broadcast by Fuji Television in 1965.
In fact, in an early version of The Lion King, Simba was white!
