you can't really show how a screen feels on a photo because the photo will feel like your screen, but I got the matte screen protector for the 30€ OLED tablet. it's still not as good as my daughter's drawing tablet to read manga, but there's nothing in that price range that compares to this and is big enough for my old eyes, so this is my manga reading maschine now. actual manga and e-ink screen provided for comparison.

so at this point I should admit that even with a 10" screen I still need to zoom in to read unknown kanji or furigana regularly. meaning for a truly zoom-and-pan-free experience I'd probably need an A4 screen, at which point even "OLED Android from 2017" would be cost-prohibitive, let alone an e-ink screen.
aging kinda sucks for bookworms. I still hope the right kind of glasses makes this better, or I'll have to like, hire a young and promising Japanology intern to read books out loud for me like old academics in movies while transmitting to her my accumulated life wisdom about the true meaning of research and whatnot, and like, who has cash to properly recompense Japanology interns, in this apocalypse. I can't pay an intern in life wisdom.
however the day was saved by just how easy and smooth it is to zoom and pan on this screen. while I tend to underestimate the usefulness of touch interfaces because they're so awful for typing, for this they're perfect, and the 10-year-old hardware handles high-resolution images perfectly fine. the whole experience is still pleasant and infinitely superior than reading manga in my >A4 computer screens, thanks to the combined effects of the display quality, portability, touch UI, and—importantly!—the fact that I have restricted the tablet from doing anything else other than reading manga/ebooks.
for 30€ I am very glad I did this—I mean the true cost was several evenings spent finding and customising an open source ROM that can still run on this thing, setting up all the required software, mending the fabric of the casing etc. but at the end I got something that is giving me plenty of Japanese practice every day, plus a great EPWING dictionary device, plus as a bonus, finally a way to read academic PDFs that doesn't suck too much :blobcat_thumbsup:

ok so this is dope—again, I have no way to show it to you through a photo, but the oled screen with the matte filter, while it's still to bright for my tastes in a pitch black bedroom at night (even at minimum brightness + "night mode") – at average café ambient light it's amazing, practically as good as e-ink to read manga. now I kinda want to slap matte films on every screen I have, plus I'm like, bitter and resentful that this isn't the industry standard for the screens themselves (like my daughter's drawing tablet that inspired this whole thing). even the muting of the colours in the odd colour page looks better than the garish gloss of normal Android glass in my opinion, and objectively way less harsh on the eyes. (though where the OLED truly shines continues to be the gorgeous blacks. well, where it doesn't shine I guess.)
also: this manga is so gay lol :heart_sparkles_lesbian:

I hope at some point I can invest 100-something euro in bifocal prescription glasses with reading lenses built-in and adapted for my astigmatism etc., that should help with the whole furigana situation

regular glossy screenis my ranking of what's best to read on (and therefore to use at all; exception being CRTs better for retrogaming.)
