OH FFS. Why is Carney giving his wife $82 million to observe the oceans? Don't we have a gazillion qualified scientists already doing that?

@LaylaAlexandrovna Because he can. Eventually all democracies devolve into the grift. Vote for me and I'll give you other people's money. If you're a friend or family, you can have a cushy *job* paid for out of the public purse. -

@KeepTakingTheSoma I wonder why we even pretend this is democratic.

@LaylaAlexandrovna It's part of the legitimising ritual. They pretend that we have a choice of candidates and we get a variety of rosette colours within the uniparty. We know, they know we know and we know they know that they know. We've been living in this cargo cult for a while. -

@KeepTakingTheSoma You're making me not want to vote! ARGH My sis just told me she's NOT voting at all this time around. Another friend just told me she NEVER votes.
I applied for a mail in ballot for the city election. The provincial election has a location near me so I'll probably vote in that one too even though it's an exercise in futility!

@LaylaAlexandrovna I would vote if there were a NONE OF THE ABOVE box. I haven't seen a candidate on a ballot that I would consider voting for for a long time. We need better candidates.
When I look at the calibre of UK MPs, I despair. The local party leaders choose them, so we can only presume that Jess Phillips et al were the best on offer when selected to stand. This does no auger well. -

Running for office has become so expensive it seems we only get people who are interested in money and furthering themselves rather than caring about the people who actually make up our countries.
I don't see Pierre Poilievre (leader of the official opposition and Con) as one of these. But also I don't see him as some kind of hero. It seems though that there are a lot of things Cons can't agree on and unlikely any of them are going to get in despite the polls.
