   So the question is, do we respect the intention of the original post, or that of the person replying?

   Like most design dilemmas, there's no right answer. Only trade-offs.

     'Followers only' replies also increase the likelihood of pile-ons.

     We've seen this repeatedly for Black people.

     But that implies denying the original poster their audience.

     It's a trade-off.

     @se_davidobrien oh, wait, I think I know what this is. When the op posts publicly, and then a troll replies followers-only, with something horrible. And then their followers reply, either publicly or privately.
