     This is literally why I don't practice family law. A business client listens to cost / benefit and knows when to cut weight. Emotional people don't.

     The bigger problem is the attorneys. They facilitate this kinda of behavior. I know family law attorneys that are just dirtbags. They know the client will spend every last cent to "get even" or "make sure their ex doesn't win" and they pray on it by keeping them in that state.

     Emotional people really should not be allowed to represent themselves in court. The old model was that women just have to be represented by a husband or family member. That didn't account for women who are rational, but it was effective at keeping psychological children out of the court system.

     Here, the average family law attorneys are considered bottom of the barrel. They were usually bottom of their class at a tier 3 school.

     The sad part is it drags the court to their level, because it has to move cases forward even if everyone is an idiot. This eventually leads family law judges to get in the habit of just making shit up. It's kinda like that experiment where they raised a child with a chimpanzee and the child started chimping.

     At least to the extent of support, family law is an archaic pre-welfare state program that is now used to have private, working citizens subsidize the modern state's welfare system, but far in excess of what the state would itself ever pay directly.
