     @afewbugs I’ve had many arguments with British people about this and sometimes I have to remind myself that they probably weren’t taught this stuff

     I once told a friend that my country was brutally occupied after the British swore up and down that Asian men could never win them in a war, but said Asian men rode over on bicycles.. and won. He was very upset (not at the brutal occupation) but at the idea of inferior military disposition. No longer a friend, but yeah. Not even a right wing type

     Without wanting to make everything about me as a white British woman, I find it genuinely horrifying how the British history I learned in school was exclusively about things that happened within the British Isles and nothing about what the British Empire did in the rest of the world, I had to pick all that up myself as an adult. I'd like to believe things are different in schools now but I'm not sure they are.

     @eco_amandine @skinnylatte I also spent two years at school in Belgium and learnt nothing about the atrocities in the Belgian Congo, I can't 100% conclusively say we wouldn't have learned it if I'd been there long but honestly I'm sceptical

     @afewbugs @skinnylatte I went to French school and it was the same, regarding French colonies. I had to learn it by myself.

     @skinnylatte I don't know if any country teaches stuff in schools that doesn't portray them in a favourable way much as I'd like to believe someone must. But it's quite scary how many white people seem to not either have the curiosity to question it or to have had friends who go "well my family ended up here because of this awful thing" and gone "wait what? Why have I never heard of that?"
