One of the big things about open source models is you could use it in place of search engines, even if ads get folded into closed-source models, which would kill the models that do that. Google’s core business is under serious threat. A lot of people just use free Gemini, and more will switch in the future.

      >Google’s core business is under serious threat.
      >search
google has not given a shit about their search engine being good for the last decade. now ad revenue? hardware? gsuite? those probably make more money than search

@Griffith pewdiepie packaged the meta-search engine SearXNG with Odysseus

The problem that remains unsolved is large-scale scraping and indexing, which you can't pull off without infra.
In the near term, models could probably just search github and other known-good sites directly

Commercial search never gives you that one weird site that you would have never found on your own anymore. Just SEO AI slop.
So as they get worse and AI gets better, it'll eventually result in what you said, I think. Very plausible!

search basically only exists to index and serve seo-optomized sites that they use adsense to serve ads

Search was the largest chunk of Google’s income, accounting for $63.3 billion.

Google just had its first negative cash flow quarter due to massive AI spending
Google continues to report big quarterly revenue, but its AI spending has skyrocketed.

to be fair, I did just skim (but mostly read the headline (i know kill me))

I will admit i am biased in my take but I also still this search is quite bad, it just happens to be that only le tech nerds think its bad

also I wonder if that cash flow is directly from search or auxiliary to search
