Man the children’s media is SO feminized it’s disgusting. I find almost nothing for heroes journey that is boy focused within the last 20 years. I’m talking books. Can’t find anything.

@BowsacNoodle Give them Japanese light novels, surely would be much better than the absolute local crap we had when I was a kid

I recall some free books coming with some school books that we had to order, we eventually had to do a writeup on it and it was fucking shit. Author clearly didn't really understand video games

It sucks. Sure you can just give them obscure/old media that'd not gay, but then that'll stunt their relationship with their peers by not letting them share in whatever's popular. I don't actually know what the right solution is.

We really need to develop alternate social channels not just for adults but their children too. And everyone's so spread out you can't just have the kids meet up to play every day.

This is one of the few good ones I’ve found. Still, it’s just a graphic novel and it’s an old story. We need a modern Hardy Boys.

I remember reading it on Fun Brain as a middle schooler, thinking it would be below my age demo, but I ended up enjoying it way more than I thought I would.

@BowsacNoodle Almost nobody who can write well and takes writing seriously will write "children's literature" because the medium itself is essentially propaganda and bringing the classroom home with its modern morality plays so that the only people who write "children's literature" are the last people who should be writing for children.
As someone who remembers Scholastic book fairs and reading some of that slop you are better of not even bothering with with anything remotely from that sphere. Maybe find some old Hardy Boys books (the original un-modernised ones) if you want some sort of book series for "younger audiences" otherwise stay the hell away from the children's media ghetto. There's no reason why a boy can't read the classics.

@wgiwf @BowsacNoodle Fun fact: DOAWK was originally meant for adults, but the publisher decided that the print version would be popular among middle schoolers. You can see this in the original 2004 webcomic version, which has some slightly edgier parts (nothing too crazy, just stuff like alcohol references and mild profanity, but stuff Scholastic, the slop mill, wouldn't like)

Basically we need to live near each other. We need our own communities. We need to be willing to become poor in exchange for living together.

@wan @BowsacNoodle I've never personally read them but heard they were okay. Truth be told, after the rather dreadful experience of reading for school, and books one got from school associated events, I didn't read much until adulthood and actually learned what good books were.
This actually further strengthens my thesis of children's literature being essentially worthless.

Always funny to see one of Stratemeyer's archetypical package book series named a classic.

@wgiwf @BowsacNoodle There's no faster way to kill a love of reading than to force it. I loved reading as a kid; devoured piles of books – plenty of children's lit among it. But when something was truly crap, or boring, or I just didn't like it, my parents encouraged me to just put it down and find something else I did like. If it was actually good, then it was better to re-find it when I was ready, and if it was truly bad then I'd dodged a bullet. They talked to me about what I was reading, too, from novels to nonfiction to comics. Such are the foundations of taste.

@wan I want my sons to experience adventure reading and be inspired to do it in real life. I already teach them stuff like exploring trails in the woods, but I want books and such for when I can’t be with them

@branman65 @Maroon @wgiwf I will say the books are awfully irony poisoned and demoralizing for stuff popular with elementary school age kids. I don’t like my kids reading them or listening to them because the guy gives off a sort of a 2010s Redditor vibe. I do find them funny, but I want my kids to have more of a “I need to try“ not ”oh nothing works out” vibe.

@BowsacNoodle @Maroon @wgiwf While I disagree with some aspects of your criticisms (I wouldn't describe Greg Heffley as a 2010s Redditor, and especially not his creator, Jeff Kinney) I do appreciate you explaining your issues with the franchise as opposed to dismissing it as misery porn and then implying that I am a terrible person.
