You thought flock was bad? You haven't seen nothing yet. There is a reason RMS doesn't own a cell phone (and I stopped using one too, if you need a device get a Pine Phone, throw Mobian on it, disable the modem via dip switch, and get a USB wifi adapter for internet):

"US Police Now Armed With Israeli Spy Vans Simulating Mobile Phone Towers"

"If you thought Flock was bad check out Falconet. Falconet from Israeli company Cognyte serves as a cell tower simulator that intercepts cell phone data from all devices within range. Police mount these systems in Tahoes so the vehicles can collect information while driving through areas without any direct interaction with targets. This mobile approach generates ongoing records of phone locations and communications for everyone nearby rather than only suspects, which creates comprehensive movement profiles and bypasses traditional warrant requirements under the Fourth Amendment. @jeremiah I want to say no shit, but understandably I didn't link to the story and it did say 'you haven't seen nothing yet'. The story I believe was in relation to an expansion of the surveillance and use by probably more local police departments for general surveillance than use in more targeted investigations by law enforcement up the hierarchy.

@mr_penguin we've had stingrays for years, since 2007 at least:

Stingray use in United States law enforcement
The use of stingrays by United States law enforcement is an investigative technique used by both federal and local law enforcement in the United States to obtain information from cell phones by mimicking a cell phone tower. The devices which accomplish this are generically known as IMSI-catchers, but are commonly called stingrays, a brand sold by the Harris Corporation. History The United States Federal government has had access to stingray-type technology since at least 1995. The Baltimore Police Department began using the devices in 2007. The New York City Police Department has used the devices since 2008. Initially, the use of stingray phone trackers was a secret, due to a number of non-disclosure agreements between individual police departments and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, the FBI entered into agreements with at least 48 police departments in the United States. In these agreements, the FBI allowed police departments to use the stingrays, while requiring police departments provide no information to either the public or the courts regarding the...
