   Why is it so hard to follow someone on a different server if I have [at]foobar[at]mastodon.social. It keeps asking me to login to mastodon.social which I don't have an account on. Small stuff like this will stunt any real adoption. What am I doing wrong? This should be simple.

     @grumpygamer Copy their profile URL and paste it into the search box, but for mastodon.social and other big servers you can authenticate with them with your mastodon.gamedev.place account and stay logged in and follow a bunch of people.

     @emceebois @grumpygamer Yeah, it's basically a no-go. One thing that could work is that someone trusted could stand up a generic Fediverse-follow website and large instances could link to that. You could log in to one site and follow people via that. I'm following most people via the timeline when they get boosted from someone else I'm following. This is why I'm following thousands of accounts for now.

     @mattl @grumpygamer How difficult would it be to implement a federated cookie system, so actions like the "follow" button would effectively take place in an iframe loading content from where the user is actually logged in? Are the security issues with cross-site cookies SO grave that it's just utterly unfeasible?

     @mattl @grumpygamer On the one hand, yes, on the other hand, he's right that this is a much bigger ask for non-technical audiences than most Mastodon users seem willing to admit.
