First, I am a fat fuck who only managed to lose some weight once. That is hardly considered being an exercise guy :D
Now, to the jumping rope. You are lifting your entire weight, even though just slightly. That is a great base. You didn't mention just how long do you actually jump, or, what is your goal though.
I believe, that is still should raise your basal metabolic rate, therefore make you more active during the day. That is the most important metric for most of your life. But, you cannot burn off fat (on mass) using cardio. You do that only either through hunger or from excersises, that you can do for hours a day. (Walking for example)
Either way, as long as you feel more alive during the day, that is the most important metric in the end, unless your goal is to lose weight.
