     i think the hardware requirements are the result of developers being sloppy, gaming isn't the only type of software to suffer from this

     Not gonna lie. I still play Quake III. Nothing since has captured the pure chaos combined with minimal investment. Whether I have a spare five minutes or a few hours, I have enough time to play. No story, no missions, no goals, just shooting.

     UT99 runs fine on my x64. UT2004 runs as well. One is harder to find / build though, can't recall which.
     
     I've just always felt that UT moves a bit slower than Q3.

     Pretty sure UT99 (which I still fire up now and again) will run on a microcontroller in 2026 (assuming you could compile it for an appropriate cpu architecture).

     I also only listen to Testament when I play. I have a playlist. It fits really well.
