     Ain't seen it. But apparently Cameron did it, and he's pretty good at doing something cool that the studio subsequently ruins so that sounds plausible.

     Buffy was better than what is made now, but if it was made now exactly the same as it was then, it would suck now because - well, now sucks

     if you want to make something funny now, it must reflect now's suck - if you want something scary it must be worse than the suck we experience - if you want something noble and inspiring it must overcome the suck

     it is why things from suckier times like the 70s seem to have gotten a lot better

     art must reflect its time, and the current time sucks

     @brigrammer @BarelyEagle Well, unless you use bittorrent (:blacksam:), the streaming services have memory-holed all the funny episodes of Taxi, Sanford and Son, etc. Even relatively recent stuff gets that treatment, like the Ken Jeong blackface episode in Community (which was a funny show when it wasn't busy trying for maximum twee).
     
     I was not a fan of Buffy or Xena or any of that stuff when it was on the air. Joss Whedon is a Valley girl trapped in a man's body and I will fite him irl.
     
     Funny stuff doesn't get ratings. Avenue 5 is very recent and was goddamn hilarious. Two seasons, HBO killed it, consensus on the IMDB: "We don't know if it's funny because we're not sure who it's satirizing." People didn't know if it was okay to laugh because they were unclear on which side of the culture war that show was shitting on, because it wasn't doing culture war. Lodge 49 was goddamn excellent. Same kinda shit with Outer Range. Not a comedy but that show was amazing and bizarre (and kinda hard to believe Imgen Poots--who already has a name that should not be allowed for a real person to have--was 40 because she could still pass for early 30s; Brolin was goddamn perfect for that show). Two seasons, all three of those shows.
     
     People spend more time complaining on the internet about new shit that sucks than watching things that don't suck. People barely talk about the shit that doesn't suck, you know, but it is impossible to avoid knowing about Disney reverse-bleaching Snow White and un-dwarfing the seven dwarves. The whole "culture war" thing is designed to draw lines and if more people ignored it, it would go away (or the CIA would come up with something that was harder to ignore than "we made movies suck and then called you racist for disliking them"). Even if life were not finite, Hollywood lives on buzz, better to just ignore terrible things that suck and instead of feeding the machine: negative attention is still attention.

     it is like in They Live, when the evil alien people want people to do such horrible things as consume products, marry and reproduce, and follow the law - the horrible evil government in the Running Man seems far less awful than the governments we all perceive as real, etc.

     what was funny in the past is not what is funny today, because the wildest and most ridiculous scenario fails to come close to what has happened
