I think it's hard to have a proper discussion about the wider role of tech upon society without people diving in to protect tech.

I say this as someone who is involved in a few spaces like this - trying to recover tech from the evil cold grip of the techbros, with lots of well-intending people.

We never question the real urgent need for tech - it just becomes this constant baseline assumption, that tech MUST exist! Protect the tech at all costs!!!

Maybe you never question the real urgent need for tech. I won't shut up about it! I bring it up every time! Completely ruthless!

I just want to know how to be actually effective in reducing tech. Even people who agree with me are like "Welp" (shrugs helplessly) (kicks you out of your appointment if you won't take the iPad)

So as usual, the underlying problem is hierarchy... long as you have someone in charge, you will be slave to tech.

@matttutt@mastodon.social This is also why people hate the free software movement.

Tech isn't bad, we aren't luddites. It's all about who gets to be in control of the tech. The developer, or the users?
