I wish communities launched Fedi intances like they do Discord servers. Obviously, the management and cost overhead between those two is significantly different, but it would be hilarious
@Baa@mk.absturztau.be I know people with Discord "servers" who have an army of moderators who spend more time moderating than I do on my own fedi instances.
@Baa@mk.absturztau.be But fedi is not a real replacement for this type of communication because microblogs can not be compared with chatrooms. Different purpose.
I think XMPP is a better solution to replace Discord. While it is not my favorite client, I think movim.eu might be a good candidate for the average normie.
@ledocool@abyss.cafe@Baa@mk.absturztau.be That's why I recommended Movin because that is a XMPP client that seems to resemble Discord and has "Spaces" which are similar and also supports video calls and such.
@SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo@Baa@mk.absturztau.be my circle thinks matrix is more of "it" tho I personally think matrix won't do. As far as I know, to replace discord you need three basic things: text, video (with ability to stream applications with sound) and a client that seamlessly integrates all of that.
On paper matrix sounds like the solution, in practice it looks like it has been overcomplicated to push you into using their tech support. I have synapse set up with element call. Calls are shaky at best and I don't know what it needs. Probably I have to use their installer which is ESS and do it via ansible on kubernetes. Even so you won't be able to transfer audio of a captured appplication.
As for xmpp I know it has jitsi for video calls. Idk how it works but I was told xmpp doesn't have a single well fleshed out client.
@SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo@Baa@mk.absturztau.be gotta check it out. Which server do you think the best to be self hosted? I need videos too, so something like all-in out of the box solution would be nice.
