And I didn't notice until today that Masato Kato and Akira Toriyama both had some sort of serious tomboy *thing* because a fish can't see the water.

Really? I don´t think he has drawn anything other than tomboys in Dragon Ball, except maybe for young Bulma in the first DB series.

No, she was definitely a tomboy. I didn't read too far but I had the first few translated collections, right, and then they were like "We're gonna start censoring the nudity" and I was like "THIS IS AN OUTRAGE" and stopped.

@icedquinn @Suzu I disagree and can reliably tell the difference between a tomboy and a dude.

@p @Suzu the actual phrase is something like "woman with the spirit of a man" but i was being memetic.

@p I have the DB translated collection that was released here many, many years ago, fully uncensored. It's pretty good.
And Bulma definitely wore more girlish clothes during the young Goku days.
(actually, if she wasn't wearing a skirt, the classic scene of her flashing her bare pussy would never happen).

Well yeah but she's out in the forest doing robot shit and shooting guns as I recall. Maybe she was employed as a delivery girl. I forget how it worked. There were a lot of things that existed to set up sight gags.

@p in the beginning of the series, she was out looking for the Dragon Balls, because she found one and read about the legend of it granting a wish.
She is the daughter of the president/founder of Capsule Corp, which is the company that makes all the magic stuff that comes out from capsules, so she has a lot of robotic gadgets and vehicles and shit like that. She also created a radar that can locate dragon balls nearby, and she mets Goku because he has one that was left to him by his late grandpa (which we find out later was an old man who adopted Goku when the capsule containing him fell in the forest nearby).
Pre-DBZ Dragon Ball is actually pretty cool, and focus a lot more in the adventuring aspect. Then Toriyama found out that it was easier to just make an infinite series of "fighting tournaments" where people screamed at each other with increasingly ridiculous power levels, and here we are.

Oh, yeah, absolutely. It was fun. Just I stopped reading because they started censoring it.

@Suzu
Toriyama writing Super was kinda the opposite. He'd write all the story stuff and then put in "and a fight scene happens here" and let the animation team do whatever they wanted with it.
It's part of why the fights seemed kinda weirdly out of place sometimes.
