@iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be I think in this context authoritarian is opposed to democratic, not libertarian as it should be unfortunately.

@iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be I think autocratic is a better term here. A democratic regime can still be authoritarian.

@ariarhythmic@ohai.social @iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be I'm talking about the fact that some democracies still vote for authoritarian laws to be put in place, making the country authoritarian despite being democratic.

@SuperDicq @iro_miya No, contrary to some dictators' statements, "Illiberal democracy" is not a real thing. You either allow for free and fair elections to happen or you (set up an elaborate circus show in their place and) don't.

@ariarhythmic@ohai.social @iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be Also extreme libertarians believe in "Tyranny of the majority" and believe that forms of organizing a state that is not majority rule democratic can be much more libertarian than a liberal democracy.

@ariarhythmic@ohai.social @iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be Yes, I am not one of those extreme libertarians who thinks tyranny of the majority is absolute. You can counteract tyranny of the majority with having a decent constitution for the most part.
I am also a big supporter of more direct democracy, specifically direct democracy with proxy voting (liquid democracy) is my personal favorite. -

@SuperDicq @iro_miya most liberal democracies today do not have real majority rule AKA direct democracy. Usually instead there is a representative system where a couple hundred people at most make decisions for the whole population. The idea is for them to reflect the views of their jurisdiction but in reality there is no obligation for them to act in the people's best interests and their views are all over the place. That makes that system dubious.
