So basically the entire legacy of DOGE is "lol why are we funding food-destroying plague prevention and not giving more subsidiaries to spacex?" *screwworm attack*

USAID was a tumor that needed to be excised, but considering we got involved in another expensive sand war for Israel immediately afterward killing the agency it was basically a wash. Blurry Moon likes this. -

@zaitcev @vriska @sun every destructive mountain of shit that the government finances is covered in a pretty blanket. This is so people will moan at the loss of the pretty blanket when the destructive shit is stopped. Because they dont realize that the blanket is there only so they will celebrate the shit that is burying them.

@sun @vriska I think you fail to realize that every bureaucracy, including NOAA and NIST is between 20 and 200 times larger than it needs to be. But each of them seek and hold one tiny vital function hostage, and then force cuts to affect it. Most famously FAA does that to air traffic control. This even happens in layers! In particular, whenever there's an ATC crisis, FAA forces a slow-down at major airports, but the completely unnecessary towers like KAEG continue to operate as if nothing is happening. Not just many such cases, but every case is such. -

@sun @vriska @zaitcev The pretty blanket often does, a vacuum cleaner does too, would you pay 100k for one that came with side life long side effects? Should the mob be tolerated because some of their fronts are useful?

@Phil @vriska @zaitcev that's not what I said, you're a dumbass for comparing the useful functions of these agencies to little nice to have things instead of things that trillions of dollars worth of commerce and all tons of publiic infrastructure relies on -

@sun @vriska @zaitcev Sure, anybody who wouldn't want to plunge future generations into ever increasing debt to pay for everything anybody could possibly find useful and a bunch of stupid shit, is surely a dumbass. And anybody that can't defend their position so has to resort to 10 year old name calling behavior is certainly a genius.

@Phil @sun @vriska @zaitcev This man is both simultaneously correct and incorrect.
Correct in that all government agencies can be coerced and rotted from the inside out and therefore no longer hold value, either via malice or incompetence or sheer bloat, so why bother.
But incorrect in the root cause. Spending is not necessarily evil, and many *good* debt spending ideas brought 2, 3, sometimes 5 dollars in actual value per dollar spent (Keynesian economics). But so long as a democracy as retarded as this one can self-sabotage in this fashion and rip all that away through fraud, greed, war, and incompetence, it will be for naught. -

@7666 @Phil @vriska @zaitcev there's no indication that nist is 20-200x overfunded and even if it were it is not remotely near the top of the list of overfunded wasteful agencies, also it is not really in the category of "why are we even funding this ridiculous shit". that doesn't even mean it can't be made less wasteful, it also doesn't mean it didn't deliberately sabotage its mission to ransom its useful function, but all those other things combined demonstrate that the trump administration is retarded. -

@sun @Phil @vriska @zaitcev No we need NIST, NOAA, NASA, all these great agencies. If anything they need more funding. They are likely staffed by underpaid and overworked genuinely good people. They are just captured by idiots at the top.
The most difficult argument to have is "If they report to idiots, does that make the whole organization idiots". Not on its face, but if idiots call the shots, people will become idiots not to be fired, and well, what do you get?Blurry Moon likes this. -

@Phil @vriska @zaitcev I think youre wrong that it could be effectively provided by private industry, there are too many contradictions in mission to make that possible, but I don't consider you an idiot for believing that, just incorrect.
as far as the debt issue, do something about the pentagon, and uncap payroll tax before you kneecap actually useful services -

@sun @7666@comp.lain.la @vriska @zaitcev we are funding it with DEBT. Every program has its backers and 1.85 billion for what it does, hardly seems frugal. And much of it would be provided by private enterprise
