Some people say that all Democratic politicians are flawed, and that if we want to win races, we need to overlook those flaws. They talk about Graham Plattner's tattoos and sexting, or Eric Swalwell's sexual harassment. But there are a lot of Democrats who haven't had scandals, like Zohran Mamdani. It took me a while to realise that the people who say this *do* think he has flaws -- to them, he has the wrong skin colour, the wrong religion, the wrong politics.
@evan no democratic politician is perfect but none is on the level of corruption and evil that Trump is, so I'll take any democrat over Trump or one of his goons. Baby steps.
@evan I know, I'm just begging for a change at this point. I'll take all the tatoos and spicy scandals over what we have right now. Of course, I'd like it more with genuinely good people like Mamdani, Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders.
@mathieucomandon right. My point is that in some people's minds, all three have disqualifying flaws just for their democratic socialist affiliation. Piling on gender or ethnicity or religious flaws makes them, in these people's minds, almost unelectable. All this is unspoken but implied. My point is that people consider these things as worse than financial misbehavior or sex scandals. I think that sucks.
@evan I'm still resentful against those who didn't vote for Harris because of whichever issue, like Palestine. I hold them partially responsible for Trump being in power once again. In France, there is a strong culture of "faire barrière au FN" (block the National Front) that still holds up to this day. Sometimes it's really about choosing the lesser evil.
@mathieucomandon I also think those pro-Palestinian votes could have made a huge difference. I hope candidates and the party do a better job getting anti-war, anti-genocide voters into the polls in November.
@HakeemG@mathieucomandon That's exactly the kind of expression of solidarity I'm talking about. If Democrats make that case to Palestinian and Arab Americans this fall, they're going to have a lot better results at the ballot box.
