   AI will change the world -- on the net for better or worse, idk -- but I do know that many of its biggest enthusiasts, or at least engagers thereof, will look at themselves in the mirror and lament what they see.

     @smithy when it does work the utility is so high that it entices me to keep using it. and the rate at which it improves and addresses those deficiencies is extraordinarily high even for the tech field. maybe it will backfire in the future but I kind of feel like, even if the river is taking you to a waterfall, paddling backwards doesn't help anything.

     @sun Just to be clear -- it is extremely useful and I use it very regularly. But I think it has bad second order effects, especially for lots of everyday folks, but even for me when I use judiciously.
     
     I'm very optimistic on the potential long run economic effects of AI, but pessimistic in the short-run -- very pessimistic on the potential psychological, cultural, and existential implications of AI, but not in the annihilative or apocalyptic sense. Either way, not only to keep up with tech and culture, but from a security standpoint, it has to be leaned into.
     
     I do think there's something to this notion of "cogsec", and that those on the lower end, exporting their critical thinking on even any and every task, are going to have heavy atrophying of the mind (but we probably all will to some extent).
     
     Could open new doors, of course. Coming around to the idea that the luddites are often wrong in saying the relentless historical march of the technological brings us nothing of value -- it does & often great deal of it too -- but they might be right that something of value, sometimes incommensurable w/new values, is irretrievably lost.

     @smithy radio and records destroyed the community activity of singing on your porch with friends, it was irretreviably lost.
     
     Not using this as a "march of change is inevitable" argument just observing that you're right and it does happen and it does represent a loss. And that it would be good in some way to get people back to consciously trying to preserve good things that aren't as convenient as pressing a button and being instantly gratified. with AI we may be reaching a point where as a species we either figure out how to do this really quick or we're going to lose our humanity completely.

     @sun Yes, 100% -- AI is not a difference in kind to these prior changes, just a freakishly high difference in degree.
     
     Just another side note: I think another huge jump in this direction was algorithmic content curation.
