@3T @j Yeah. Some frequencies you can't transmit on unless you pass a test and some frequencies are restricted by mode (vox, Morse code, or digital modes) and then some by transmission power. A lot of it is like, basic safety stuff about duty cycles and making sure you know how to not fry yourself with a microwave antenna and then some of it is physics/EE questions, there are three levels. Rule of thumb is that if you keep it under 1W, no one will hassle you for transmitting anything anywhere, but a lot of it is nerd shit that, like, you've got to know some really nerdy shit before you even know how to fuck it up and really unless you're a serious nuisance on frequencies the government cares about, no one will hassle you for *anything*. Even if they *want* to hassle you, it's real hard to catch someone doing something.

@j @p I thought only for professional radio there's a need for such an exam. Why it's called amateur radio if you need a license?

      "Amateur" as in "non-commercial".

@p @3T @j In a way it's like how for low-speed vehicles there's usually no need for any license or even road certification, but beyond certains points it needs to be road legal and to have a driver license.

@lanodan @3T @j Yeah, like, it is possible to fuck up the entire spectrum. And obviously, like, in the US no one really cares what you transmit and how as long as you're not being a nuisance; it's only really "technically" illegal.
