2. The ‘Growing up in the online world’ consultation closes on 26 May 2026. What’s being proposed will make the Internet riskier, not safer. This includes: Expansion of online ID checks – Age verification goes beyond adult content with privacy-invasive checkpoints hitting lawful spaces. VPN restrictions – Making access dependent on ID checks threatens cybersecurity. Internet curfews – Blocking content or services after certain times entrenches ID checks. Social media ban – Banning under-16s is only possible by checking the age of every user.

  We are consulting on further measures to prepare children for the future in an age of rapid technological change. This includes potential age restrictions on social media and other services such as gaming sites and AI chatbots, restrictions on addictive design features and risky functionalities, and better support for parents and families.
