So now after having lived in small world Midwest -- city no larger than ~350,000 people -- it's clear that liberals in the suburbs are absolutely delusional in thinking recycling is happening at any meaningful scale.
No fucking wonder my boss just throws everything in the trash. I was confused when I first encountered this behavior, but huge cities in the USA do not have the capability currently to support large scale recyclingJohnny Peligro [ single ] likes this.Johnny Peligro [ single ] repeated this. -

They emailed us to tell us that ALL recycling must manually be taken down to the ground level dumpsters
Also they said in their email you can recycle your laundry detergent containers (you literally can't)Johnny Peligro [ single ] repeated this. -

MIND YOU this apartment I'm in was built like 3 years ago.
Recycling was not part of the design of this building that probably broke ground in 2018.

@feld you should have seen the software engineer's face when I told him the dump in San Mateo shipped all their trash to China. He guffawed and called me an idiot. Then I asked him what he thinks they do with it and he said there's a landfill.
I asked him how there's a landfill on the coast of the san francisco bay where a 2 inch hole in the ground pools with seawater and his face melted into this look of profound and terrible realization before blanking like he had just experienced a hard resetSexy Moon and Johnny Peligro [ single ] like this. -

@feld @Moon if is worthwhile, you will get paid to recycle. it cost more to recycle plastic than make it new.

Well most Americans don't have steel to recycle daily so that's a head scratcher but we had large mixed metal recycling at a few locations where I was from and someone somewhere must have been buying the scrap steel Johnny Peligro [ single ] likes this. -

@feld That is wild. I mean, I appreciate your point--recycling at scale is really not supported in the US--but usually we have recycle bins for every home, and apartment buildings have massive ones. (Why can't you recycle your laundry detergent containers? Do they not have a recycling number on them?)
