     @inthehands alternate take: place names in non-latin alphabets should be spelled phonetically in latin alphabets. I also expect "Ohio" to be spelled differently in Ukrainian/Russian/Japanese/etc.

     Isn’t that what’s going on here, more or less? Both Ukrainian and Russian use Cyrillic as their primary script, and the Romanization of both it roughly phonetic AIUI.

     @inthehands @stinerman Yes, it’s spelled differently between the two languages and the spelling difference matches the phonetic difference, which in turn aligns with the respective romanisations.

     (Being ‘spelled phonetically’ isn’t as simple as it might sound, generally speaking — whose phonetics? — but in this case it’s straightforward I think.)
