@paulknightly @CStamp @ai6yr i did this hike on a spring break trip, too (in 2010) without really knowing what i was getting into. definitely seems unwise now.
there were some mennonite women in dresses and bonnets (and sneakers) on the chained section talking about not being scared because if they fell, they'd meet god or something.
@ai6yr The people in that video are NOT using safety gear. They are depending on an arm to save them if a foot slips. I’d say this is worse than walking on the black rocks at a place like Peggy’s Cove, but, realistically, if you fall in the water, odds are against anyone being able to pull you out.
@CStamp @ai6yr some friends and I hiked Angel's Landing many years ago during our freshman year spring break. It was pre-smartphones, so we really didn't have any idea of what the hike would entail - a couple miles on paper wasn't bad. Got to the chained section and we peer pressured each other into finishing the hike. I hated every minute of that section but the view at the end was spectacular... at the time the NPS wasn't doing a justice with conveying just how dangerous that section can be.
@CStamp There's a big section of Angels Landing which is basically a sheer cliff with only 3? 4? feet of trail width. To get people over that section, they use a chain, which allows people to either harness up (smart), or hang on for dear life (real risk of death, losing grip, slipping)
@CStamp I rappel and rock climb. I would not do this section without safety gear. But, I am not a daredevil... I am fine with safety gear, I will not do anything without.
@ai6yr What’s a chained section?
