"Digital sovereignty", "data sovereignty", "technology sovereignty" are all related terms:

I am from a generation that thought of the Internet as a place out of space, unrelated to any particular legal jurisdiction. This JPB piece is a classic.

Even services hosted domestically, run by local affiliates, are not immune to US government interference. The prosecutor of the ICC lost access to his Outlook email at the order of the Trump administration.

Since the Snowden revelations, more than a decade ago, it's been clear that those big American tech companies have colluded with the US federal government against their own American and overseas users. The reelection of Donald Trump in 2024 has put this even more in the spotlight.

I feel like this idea has cloaked the dominance of technology by big American tech companies. Value at the level of the stack where governments participate and encourage local business -- mobile and terrestrial Internet companies, for example -- has withered in favour of big cloud services and device operating systems.

But I think that domestically controlled communications and transportation infrastructure is a good model. Good fences make good neighbors. From trains and planes and trucking to phones and postal mail and internet, having domestic companies manage circulation locally, with well-defined interfaces at the border, seems like a healthy and robust pattern to replicate.

I am wary of nationalism and the overemphasis on national borders, especially when it comes to cultural issues. People have more in common across borders than what separates them.

Social network data is particularly sensitive. It is how we relate to family and friends, but it is also increasingly how we debate and form opinions about local politics. Interference by foreign governments or other entities in domestic elections using social networks is a real danger.

@evan Lemme preface this by saying that I don't ask out of disagreement, but out of interest in historical context: how much do you think we know about the US-based "Big Tech" companies that no longer exist, like Yahoo, and whether or not agreeing to cooperate with federal law-enforcers orgs affected their survival rate?
