From Sabine's email for the day:

Researchers from OpenAI have put forward an industrial policy for artificial intelligence and it’s quite a read. They propose a legally recognised “Right to AI,” meaning broad public access to powerful systems, backed by government-funded compute resources so that researchers, startups, and public institutions can run models themselves, rather than rely on a few companies.

To make this reality, they want to see an expansion of electricity supply for data centres by fast-tracking nuclear and renewables. They also suggest a national wealth fund that captures a share of AI-driven profits and redistributes it to citizens, alongside taxes or levies on highly automated systems, effectively a “robot tax”.

Of course none of that has any chance of happening, but OpenAI can now claim they care about the common man.

@steter It seems most of us would be happy with the “Right to healthcare” first and foremost.

@davidtheeviloverlord If they could identify where they swiped content from, that would be great. I don't see where they did that, making this all an incredible heist. Copyright holders would need to file claims. It's all part of an ongoing robbery in broad daylight, with the federal government's blessing (plus every locale letting them install AI data centers).

Shouldn't the (so-far fictional) profits of AI be redistributed to the writers, artists, photographers, etc whose work they stole to stuff into their stochastic errorist machines in the first place?

Your summary of Sabine’s email highlights the massive gap between Biological Intelligence and Corporate Artificial Intelligence:

      1. The "Power" Paradox
OpenAI is calling for an expansion of electricity supply, fast-tracking nuclear, and renewables just to keep their models running.

The Contrast: An octopus brain operates on a handful of watts. The machine is so inefficient it needs a "national wealth fund" and dedicated nuclear reactors just to hallucinate a response.

@steter Sam Altman has been on this for at least a year now. Variations on "universal basic compute" instead of universal basic income. The core part of all proposals: OpenAI should get infinite money from the government, forever, without having to do anything.
Perpetual public subsidies for one private company.
Socialism for me, not for thee.
