Just as I feel I only get ‘Thai spicy’ when I speak Thai, I feel I get a ‘Chinese hard’ massage also only when I speak Mandarin

When most people get a massage, I guess they’re looking for relaxation.

When I get a massage, I’m looking for an old Chinese auntie or uncle with thumbs of steel to reach deep into my soul (and fascia).

I get so angry at relaxing massages

The only massage place I liked in the Monterey area was one where people complained it was so painful they couldn’t sleep for days. I read that review and went right, that’s what I need! (It was.. fine. It was a moderately strong massage. In China / Thailand / Indonesia it would just be a normal massage)

Bodywork is an important part of life in the places I’ve spent time.

The Mandarin / Cantonese linguistic split is interesting for different types of bodywork.

I guess if I do ‘tie da’ (ti da) I’m speaking more to Cantonese practitioners. For acupuncture / deep tissue massage / cupping, more Mandarin.

I always say that if you want to get stuff like this, best to get personal recs (I have a knack for researching and finding good ones). Getting a mediocre one is worse than not getting one. Getting a good one is really really good

@Devils_Rancher haha, they’ll do it at the Asian places but you have to specify

@skinnylatte The few times I’ve had a massage I’ve told them “Pretend you hate these shoulder muscles and that you want to rip them off my body.” Most are reluctant to really dig in that hard.
