@thomasfuchs the search doesn’t work at all man. Like, it’s not oh this search is poor. No. It doesn’t work at all. Why even have a search button if you’re not really going to implement a feature? It’s frustrating.

@thomasfuchs yeah someone didn’t think this through very well. I get that there is a balance with privacy and accessibility to be maintained, but this doesn’t provide anything like the experience it could. Yes, it’s a distributed systems problem. I don’t know if we need to have centralization or not to make a proper search happen on Mastodon. Is another approach possible? It sounds like the ATProto makes you have a copy of the whole network and I can’t see that being sustainable. One of the good things about the fediverse is the startup cost is low, and needing to store a copy of everything on the network would negate that.
